Homework Term 3

Homework is handed out every Monday and is marked on Fridays.  The students know the expectation and must collect their homework from the homework file in the classroom if they were away on Monday.  Homework is expected to be completed, however I know there are some families that find homework a real burden.  However as the Year 8's are moving towards high school there will be no excuses about homework not completed, and it becomes very important for them to complete it.  Therefore I encourage you to support your child and set high expectations about finding regular time to set aside to complete the set tasks to develop very important time management skills.

New Zealand BMX Champs

Kaly Harcourt and Baylee Luttrell have been working hard for many months towards their goal of riding at the NZ BMX Championships in Auckland in July.  I will get the girls to post in here their experiences when they get back but I know that Kaly achieved 3rd place in the world. 

Term 2

Welcome back to Term 3 - so hard to believe how fast the year is going.  I know many of the Sports Class students have been involved in representative sport over the holidays - including myself!  I spend the first 4 days down in New Plymouth with the Under 15A Hamilton City Netball rep team and played 7 games, and inspite of only losing one game we came 5th.  Had a very exiting game against Wellington with the iconic Irene Van Dyk standing on the sideline watching her daughter Bianca play against my team.  Lots of mental toughness needed when the girls realised who they were playing, especially my GK!  We were down 7 - 2 at the first quarter and I watched a team who looked like they were deer caught in the headlights!  After a rather stern talking to at quarter time the team I knew came out to play and totally blew them off the court in the 2nd quarter to finally win the match 25- 15.  A lot to be said for mental toughness! 

I had the pleasure of watching the Gwynne Shield boys; Sharne, Brent, Reegan to name a few (lots of Maeroa boys).  The game against Cambridge was amazing!  They were down 2 tries to come back and score and with about 30 seconds to go Blade took the ball and ran right through the middle to touch down under the posts.  What impressed me was the way Anaru stepped up to take the kick to win the game.  Just like Stephen Donald!  No sweat - he knew he could do it and he did.  Very exciting game to watch boys.  Never gave up and played to the very end.  A strong message and lesson to learn. 

Lunch-Time Soccer

After coming 2nd in the lunch-time soccer last year - the only lunch-time sport we didn't win - the team were determined to show their talent and skills.  The game was so exciting and very even and ended up in a draw - so rematch!  The team turned up the next day with even more focus and lots of talk about mental toughness.  They went out and played an amazing game of soccer.  Special mention made to Tavyn and Jacob who shone, with Taylor working hard all over the field saw the team come out with a wonderful 5-2 win. 

Bengal Tiger Enrichment Enclosure

 

 

Tynealle and Lily showed wonderful creativity and worked many extra hours to build their enrichment enclosure for a Bengal Tiger. 

Enrichment Task

The class were given the opportunity to produce an enrichment project for a chosen animal - either a parrot or a Bengal Tiger.  Hope and Aroha worked really hard to develop an enclosure for a parrot that would engage it and enable it to be challenged in its environment. 

Lunch-time Touch Victory

The first lunch-time sports competition saw The Sports Class in the final against Room 2.  It was a fantastic game with an abundance of skill and speed shown by all.  The final result saw us winning. The team was Brent Rowe, Joshua Rowlinson, Tiopira Soti, Reegan Robson-Tonga, Corey Joyce
-apickering, Montessa Tairakena, Bailey Rogerson, Kaly Harcourt, Lily Rouse and Kiara tried very hard to stay at school to play but unfortunately had to go home sick (Kiara played a huge role in the semi-final to see us win very narrowly over a very talented Room 8). Well done team .
